Wrestlers' protest: Fazilka SSP in favour of wrestlers, ADGP reminds her of call of duty

Punjab SSP in favour of wrestlers': Olympian, Arjuna Awardee (Shooting), Commonwealth Games Gold medalist,  Asian Games Bronze and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Fazilka  Avneet Kaur Sidhu came in support of wrestlers’ and tweeted in favour of wrestlers, expressing her anger against their forceful removal from the Jantar Mantar.

SSP Avneet Kaur took to her Twitter handle and wrote, “Being a sportsperson, I recall the moments when we proudly stand on the podium with tears in our eyes, seeing the Indian Tricolor going up and National Anthem being played. Representing crores of Indians. Sad to see these pictures today.”

Reacting to tweet of SSP Avneet Kaur , ADGP (Law and Order) Gurinder Singh Dhillon wrote,  “I appreciate your feelings but. As police officer if one is on duty and target is un interrupted inauguration of New Parliment Building .or for that matter may be even PM visit . I am sure Police officer on duty will again stand on podium for not allowing disruption. #Law and #order”

However, the SSP responded back saying that, “But it's disheartening to see such images of Olympic champions and I wish that this issue gets resolved amicably and doesn't lead to more such situations.”

Notably, top Indian wrestlers are protesting against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over alleged sexual harassment of women athletes, including a minor. They launched their protest on April 23 at Jantar Mantar.

On Sunday, India's Olympic medallist wrestler Sakshi Malik along with her fellow wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sangeeta Phogat were detained by the Delhi Police while attempting to march to the new Parliament building where the protesting wrestlers planned to stage a demonstration.

The Delhi Police have taken off all the tents where the wrestlers were sitting on protest.

"There is no future planning and we have not thought about it as yet. We are all badly disturbed and tired mentally and whatever will happen we will let you all know, " said Sakshi Malik.

The Delhi Police have registered FIR against protest organisers and others in connection with the scuffle that broke out at Jantar Mantar on Sunday.
