New Delhi, December 15: Amidst the ongoing discussions about menstrual leave sparked by Union Minister Smriti Irani's remarks in Parliament, Ghazal Alagh, co-founder of the beauty brand Mama Earth, has contributed to the conversation with an alternative perspective. Alagh expressed her thoughts on the issue, proposing an alternative to paid period leave.

In a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), Alagh suggested a potential "better solution" rather than implementing paid leave for menstruation. As a judge on Shark Tank India, she proposed the idea of supporting remote work for individuals experiencing menstrual pain instead of granting dedicated leaves. Alagh, 35, highlighted that advocating for work-from-home options during such times might serve as a more practical solution, considering the longstanding struggle for gender equality.

The dialogue on menstrual leave gained prominence after Smriti Irani's recent statement in the Lok Sabha, responding to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, where she mentioned that there was no active government proposal to mandate paid menstrual leave across workplaces.

Further igniting the discussion, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Manoj Jha raised queries about menstrual hygiene policies in the upper house. He inquired whether there were intentions to enforce compulsory menstrual leave for employers.

In response to these inquiries, Smriti Irani emphasized that menstruation should not be viewed as a handicap but rather as a natural aspect of a woman's life journey. She discouraged advocating issues that could potentially impede equal opportunities for women due to differing perspectives on menstruation.

Additionally, Ms. Irani informed the Rajya Sabha that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had collaborated with stakeholders to formulate a draft menstrual hygiene policy for consideration.
