Amritsar Blast: Several injured in blast at Heritage Street near Golden Temple

Amritsar, May 08: Late on Sunday night, a blast occurred on Heritage Street leading to the Golden Temple in Amritsar, leaving several persons injured. 

The incident created panic in the area, with tourists and devotees strolling the street when the blast occurred. The windowpanes of a nearby restaurant and Saragarhi Sarai were shattered due to the impact of the blast, leaving pedestrians on the busy Heritage Street injured.


The injured included some girls from Haryana, who had reached the area to pay obeisance at Darbar Sahib. They sustained minor injuries as shards of windowpanes of Saragarhi parking, which were shattered due to the blast, hit them.

Dr Mehtab Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, said forensic teams were investigating the exact reason behind the blast, while police officials appealed to people to maintain peace. The situation was under control, and there was no need to panic, they said.

In the morning, forensic experts from Chandigarh scanned the spot to ascertain the cause behind the explosion, though the police said investigations were in progress. Police Commissioner Naunihal Singh said the police were yet to receive any report from the forensic experts. “Until we receive any report from them, we cannot determine the cause behind the blast,” he said.

Initially, it was believed that the blast occurred in a chimney of a restaurant. A witness, Karandeep Singh, said a motorcyclist was passing through the street when the blast occurred. People got scared and rushed towards the spot.

The police issued an advisory to maintain peace and harmony, urging people to check the fact before sharing anything on social media while adding that the situation was under control.
