IMD Red Alert: Mumbai experienced incessant rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a 'red' alert for the financial capital from Wednesday night until Thursday afternoon. The city had already received 101.35 mm of rainfall between 8 am and 10 pm on that day, while the eastern and western suburbs recorded 87.54 mm and 102.55 mm of rainfall, respectively.

Initially, the IMD had issued an 'orange' alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar districts, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall. However, due to the intensity of the downpour, the alert level was upgraded to 'red' to caution residents about the severe weather conditions.

In response to the weather warning, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) took proactive measures and declared a holiday for all government and private schools and colleges on July 27. Iqbal Singh Chahal, the municipal commissioner and administrator of the BMC, emphasized that the safety of students was a top priority, hence the decision to suspend educational institutions during this period of heavy rainfall.

The University of Mumbai also took precautionary steps by canceling all examinations scheduled to be held on Thursday across the city. The university assured students that the new exam dates would be announced later, once the situation stabilized.

The heavy showers had a significant impact on road traffic in the city, leading to waterlogged streets. However, the local train services operated at their normal pace, as reported by the Western and Central Railways.

One of the affected areas was the Andheri subway, an underpass between Andheri and Jogeshwari railway stations, which had to be closed for traffic multiple times since Wednesday morning due to waterlogging.

As the situation remained critical with continuous rainfall, residents were urged to stay vigilant and follow safety guidelines issued by the authorities. The local authorities and IMD continued to monitor the weather conditions closely to ensure the safety and well-being of the citizens during this challenging period.
