The development was shared by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann via a tweet (x), where he highlighted the importance of the Cabinet gathering. Not only did the Cabinet endorse Gurminder Singh as the new AG, but it also engaged in a comprehensive discourse on the SYL (Sutlej-Yamuna Link) issue. During these deliberations, a resolute commitment was made – Punjab would not yield even a single additional drop of water to any other state under any circumstances.
Furthermore, the Cabinet meeting contemplated the timely organisation of a monsoon session. In addition to these critical matters, various other decisions aimed at benefiting the people of Punjab were ratified, underscoring the government's dedication to addressing the state's pressing issues and priorities.
A senior advocate with a remarkable legal career spanning over 34 years. Gurminder earned his LLB degree from Punjab University in 1989 and was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in January 2014.
Despite coming from a service class background, Gurminder Singh established himself as an independent first-generation lawyer. His practice extends to various High Courts, including Chandigarh, Delhi, and Shimla. Over the years, he has handled a wide range of contentious cases in the Hon’ble Supreme Court, including Special Leave Petitions, Writ Petitions, and Civil Appeals. His areas of expertise encompass constitutional, commercial, tender, service, arbitration, and criminal matters, among others.
Gurminder Singh has a history of representing both governmental and non-governmental clients, including the Medical Council of India, Dental Council of India, Union Service Public Commission, Punjab Vidhan Sabha, and various State Boards and Corporations.
In addition to his private and institutional litigation experience, Mr. Singh has served as Assistant Advocate General and Deputy Advocate General for Punjab. He also held the position of Additional Advocate General until March 2008.
Furthermore, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has entrusted him with the role of Amicus Curiae in several Public Interest Litigations. Gurminder Singh has also dedicated his legal skills to pro bono litigation, advocating for disadvantaged sections of society.
