Punjab Heat-wave: Civil surgeon issues advisory; Here are the Do's and Dont's to avoid illnesses

Chandigarh, May 09: The Civil Surgeon of Punjab has issued a heat wave advisory containing a list of Do's and Don'ts to protect oneself from the harmful effects of extreme heat. 

The advisory states that if the temperature of a plain area reaches 40 degrees or more, 37 degrees or more for coastal areas, and 30 degrees or more for hilly areas, then a heat wave condition is created. High temperatures can disturb the body's temperature regulation system and cause heat-related illnesses. 


Newborn babies, young children, pregnant women, people 65 years of age or older, working people, people with obesity, people with mental illness, and those with physical illnesses, especially heart disease or high blood pressure, are at higher risk than others.

The advisory recommends avoiding outdoor work during the hottest parts of the day, staying hydrated by drinking fluids frequently, wearing light-colored, full-sleeved cotton clothing, and using an umbrella, cap, towel, turban, or scarf to cover the head from direct sunlight. 

Here are the Do's and Don'ts mentioned in the article:

Do's:

- Do outdoor work during cooler hours of the day (morning and evening)

- Drink fluids every half an hour, even if you're not thirsty

- Wear light-colored, full-sleeved clothing when working outdoors

- Use an umbrella, cap, towel, turban or scarf to cover your head from direct sunlight

- Rest in the shade or keep a wet cloth on the head if working in the sun

- Always carry water when going out in the sun

Don'ts:

- Do not go out barefoot, wear shoes or slippers when going out in the sun

- People with epilepsy or heart disease, kidney or liver disease who are on a limited diet of fluids should consult a doctor before increasing fluid intake.
