PTC Web Desk: Digital beggar Raju, known for his unique approach of seeking alms online, died of a heart attack at Bettiah in Bihar. Raju, who considered himself as India's first digital beggar, took pride in being a part of the digital landscape. He would solicit alms at the Bettiah railway station in Bihar. Recognisable by a digital QR code hanging around his neck, Raju's identity became synonymous with his presence at the railway station.

Unlike traditional beggars who often seek alms on streets, at temples, railway stations, and bus stands, Raju's story was unique. For 32 years, he solicited alms at the Bettiah railway station, adapting himself to the changing times. Raju transformed his approach to begging, aligning himself with the few beggars in the country who identify themselves as digital beggars. His attire included a QR code hanging around his neck, allowing people to donate using digital payment platforms such as PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm. With a tablet in hand, Raju became a familiar face at the railway station, where passengers and station vendors alike recognised him.

Much like how daily passengers at railway platforms come to recognise stall owners and porters, residents of the district had become accustomed to seeing Raju.

Raju, who found inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was an ardent admirer of politician Lalu Prasad Yadav, had a significant impact on those around him.
