A great-grandmother in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr has fulfilled her dream of reading and writing. Sameeran, 92, stepped into Chawli Primary School six months ago with Firdaus, her great-granddaughter-in-law (35) and can now read, write, and count.

Dr Pratibha Sharma, the school's principal, urged Sameeran and Firdaus to enrol in the village council school as part of the Centre's Nav Bharat Literacy Mission.

Sameeran, who was born in the early 1930s, stated that she wanted to learn after seeing her children and grandkids attend school.

"I saw my grandchildren and their children going to school, and I felt like studying with them," she told NDTV. She continued, "Learning has no age limit."

"They say when people get old, they want to revisit their childhood," Dr Sharma said of Sameeran's experience. Sameeran had the same thoughts. She approached me and asked for a pension. I told her I'd help her, but there was a catch. I informed her that if she doesn't come to school and study, she won't be able to write her name on her pension form."

The Basic Education Officer of Bulandshahr stated the district's goal of literate 21,000 people through programs such as the Nav Bharat Literacy Mission. So far, 9,000 people have completed their literacy tests, including Sameeran.

According to the 2011 census, India's literacy rate is around 73%.
