#NationalUnemploymentDay trends on social media amid PM Modi’s birthday celebrations
PTC Web Desk: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi marks his 75th birthday today, social media platforms have been flooded with greetings under the hashtag #ModiAt75, which quickly rose to the top of trending lists. At the same time, a contrasting narrative emerged online, with the hashtag #NationalUnemploymentDay gaining traction.
The trend highlighted ongoing concerns over joblessness, particularly among young Indians. The surge came shortly after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi posted a birthday message for the Prime Minister, wishing him “good health and a happy birthday.”

Despite the cordial greeting, many users seized the moment to criticise the government’s employment policies, dubbing September 17 as “Rashtriya Berozgari Diwas” (National Unemployment Day). Opposition parties, including Congress and its youth wing, amplified the trend, pointing to persistent unemployment among educated youth and a gap between available jobs and job seekers.

Government data presents a nuanced picture. The latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) shows India’s national unemployment rate at 5.1% as of August 2025, the lowest in two years, primarily driven by rural employment growth.
