At first, Parminder Dhindsa was reluctant to contest following the advice of his father, Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa. But after the party announced his ticket on April 5, his father gave him his blessings.

On April 5, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) decided to field former Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa from Sangrur for the Lok Sabha election. An announcement to this effect was made by SAD Chief Sukhbir Singh Badal in a party press release.
