Afghanistan earthquake: Death toll rises to over 1,000; many trapped under debris

Afghanistan earthquake: A massive 6.3 magnitude earthquake has claimed more than 320 lives in western Afghanistan, Herat. Hundreds of people are feared wounded, according to the United Nations.

According to local Herat authorities, this province has seen multiple earthquakes that have resulted in over 600 injuries and over 30 fatalities.


Twelve villages in the Zinda Jan and Ghoryan districts, according to officials, have been destroyed.

According to Janan Saiq, the Ministry of Disaster Management's spokesperson, at least 15 people were killed and close to 40 others injured in an earthquake in three villages in Herat's "Zinda Jan" region.

In a video, the ministry's spokesman claimed that some homes in the provinces of Farah and Badghis had also been partially destroyed.

The greatest of the six earthquakes, with a magnitude of 6.3, occurred in western Afghanistan, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

According to data from the USGS, the most recent earthquake, which had a magnitude of 5.9, took place near the "Zinda Jan district of Herat" at a depth of 7.7 kilometres.

According to local media accounts, the tremor was also felt in the neighbouring provinces of Farah and Badghis.

According to Pajhwok Afghan News, a strong earthquake devastated the mountainous area of eastern Afghanistan in June 2022, killing over 1,000 people and wounding almost 1,500 others.
