Canada moves to block sensitive info in Nijjar case over national security grounds

PTC News Desk: The Canadian government has asked the court not to make some details of the Hardeep Singh Nijjar murder case public. It said revealing this information could harm international relations and national security.

The Attorney General of Canada has filed a request to keep certain “sensitive” information confidential as the trial is expected to start later this year.

Four Indian nationals have been accused of involvement in Nijjar’s killing on June 18, 2023. The case strained ties between India and Canada after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the House of Commons there were “credible allegations” linking Indian agents to the murder. India rejected the claims, calling them “absurd” and “motivated.”

After taking office, Prime Minister Mark Carney has increased engagement with India and is working to improve trade relations. It is common for federal lawyers to ask a judge not to disclose national security information during trials, especially when the information comes from a foreign agency.

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice said the Attorney General is seeking an order under the Canada Evidence Act to block the release of certain information. The spokesperson added that no further details can be shared at this time.
