Donald Trump halts Ukraine aid, seeks Zelenskyy's commitment to peace deal
PTC News Desk: US President Donald Trump on Monday halted aid to Ukraine as he seeks to pressurise Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to engage in peace talks with Russia.
According to a White Official, Trump is focused on brokering a peace deal to end the war sparked by Russia's all-out invasion of Ukraine and is seeking Volydymyr Zelenskyy's commitment to that goal. The official further stated that the US was “pausing and reviewing” its aid to “ensure that it is contributing to a solution.”
The Trump administration has put a halt on shipments to Ukraine, temporarily suspending the delivery of essential munitions, including anti-tank weapons, thousands of artillery shells, and rockets.
This decision follows a week after officials from both the Trump administration and Ukraine were anticipated to finalize an agreement during Zelenskyy’s recent visit. The deal would have granted the U.S. access to Ukraine’s critical minerals, partly as repayment for the more than $180 billion in aid Washington has provided Kyiv since the war began.
A White House official stated that the pause is temporary and does not signify a permanent end to aid.
It will remain in place until Trump decides that Ukraine's leaders have shown a genuine commitment to pursuing peace.
