Elderly Sikh taxi driver pushed to ground in New York, viral video sparks outrage
PTC Web Desk: A disturbing incident from New York City has triggered widespread anger after a video showing an elderly Sikh taxi driver being shoved to the ground began circulating online.
According to visuals shared on social media, the confrontation was reported on the roadside following an argument between the driver and another individual. The situation quickly escalated, with the man accusing the elderly driver of hitting another vehicle. Moments later, he is seen aggressively pushing the senior citizen, causing him to fall to the ground.
Witnesses claim the attacker also issued verbal threats before turning violent. While the elderly driver sustained injuries, updates shared online suggest that he is now safe and recovering.
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from Sikh organisations and community leaders, who have expressed deep concern over the safety of elderly members of their community—especially those working in public-facing roles like taxi driving. Many highlighted that a significant number of Sikh drivers in North America are immigrants and senior citizens, making them particularly vulnerable.
Community representatives have called for strict legal action against the accused and urged authorities to ensure better protection for workers in the transport sector. They also questioned the level of aggression used in the altercation, stressing that such acts cannot be normalised.
This case comes amid growing concerns over similar incidents targeting Sikh individuals. In a recent case reported on April 22 in Woodstock, Ontario, an elderly Sikh man was allegedly assaulted and verbally abused in what authorities are treating as a hate-motivated attack.
As of now, New York authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the incident. However, with mounting public pressure, an investigation is expected to follow soon.
