'Leave by available means of transport': India issues advisory for its citizens in Iran amid possible US strike

PTC News Desk: The Indian Embassy in Tehran has asked Indian citizens in Iran to leave the country using whatever travel options are available because there are increasing fears of a possible US military strike and the situation is becoming unstable. This advice comes as anti-government protests have also started in parts of Iran.

"In continuation of the advisory issued by the Government of India on 5 January 2026, and in view of the evolving situation in Iran, Indian nationals who are currently in Iran -- students, pilgrims, business persons and tourists -- are advised to leave Iran by available means of transport, including commercial flights," the fresh advisory read.

The Embassy repeated its earlier warning from January, telling all Indian citizens and persons of Indian origin to be careful, stay away from protest areas, keep in touch with the Embassy, and watch local news for updates.

It also told people to keep their passports and other travel or identity documents easy to access and to contact the Embassy if they need help.

Tensions between the United States and Iran have been rising, with the US increasing its military presence nearby, and there are fears that talks to resolve their nuclear differences might not succeed—though negotiations are continuing, with the next round scheduled in Geneva.

Iran has said it is ready for any escalation but prefers to continue diplomatic talks, and Iranian officials expect there’s still a good chance of a peaceful resolution.
