'Indians are bad': Florida man's bizarre reason for brutally assaulting India-origin nurse
PTC News Desk: In a shocking incident, a man in Florida brutally assaulted an Indian-origin nurse, reported a police officer while testifying in court.
The attacker, identified as 33-year-old Stephen Scantlebury said “Indians are bad. I just beat the s*** out of an Indian doctor,” during the interrogation. According to the reports, he was a patient at the hospital where he attacked 67-year-old Leelamma Lal at HCA Florida Palms West Hospital psychiatric ward.
The nurse has sustained serious injuries especially on the face during the assault.
According to Sgt Newcomb, Scantlebury fled from Palms West Hospital shirtless and with medical leads still attached to his chest, and he told her: “Indians are bad. I just beat the s*** out of an Indian doctor.”
Shortly after the incident, Scantlebury was arrested and charged with attempted murder with a hate-crime enhancement.
The incident has triggered massive outrage with support pouring in from across the fraternity while demanding stricter safety measures in hospitals.
The Hindu American Foundation also weighed in on the attack, posting on X: “A patient in a Florida hospital is in custody after critically injuring nurse, Leela Lal, taunting that ‘Indians are bad’ and ‘I just beat the sh-- out of that Indian doctor.’ Escalating anti-India rhetoric is endangering lives. It must stop.”
