Middle East crisis: Iran blocks vessel headed to Karachi in Strait of Hormuz; Pakistan offers to mediate US-Iran conflict
The Middle East Crisis: Tensions continue to rise globally amid the escalating West Asia conflict. Even as Pakistan has come forward and offered to mediate between Washington and Tehran, there seems to be no end to the conflict, as of now. On the other hand, Iran has tightened its grip over a crucial global shipping route, The Strait of Hormuz.
Iran tightens maritime control
Despite an intervention by Pakistan, there have been reports that Iran has stopped a container ship heading towards Karachi at Hormuz. 'SELEN' was reportedly denied passage for failing to obtain prior clearance from the Iranian authorities.
As per statements issued by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, all vessels passing through the strait must strictly follow legal protocols, besides coordinating with Iran’s maritime administration. Admitting this, Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri said the ship was turned back due to non-compliance with these regulations.
As per the ship tracking data, the vessel, flagged under Saint Kitts and Nevis, is now located near Sharjah Anchorage in the UAE.
Strategic importance of the Strait
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes. Any disruption here is a matter of global concern. Tehran has imposed stricter checks on vessels ever since tensions mounted between the United States and Iran. Vessels linked to Western nations or their allies are the worst affected.
Iran has also maintained that only “non-hostile” ships will be allowed to pass through the strait. And that too after obtaining official permission.
Pakistan steps in with mediation offer
In a parallel development, Shehbaz Sharif has announced that Pakistan is willing to play a mediating role between the United States and Iran. "Islamabad is ready to host talks aimed at reducing tensions and finding a peaceful solution," he said.
Shehbaz Sharif says peace in the Middle East is crucial not just for the region but for global stability. The proposal is still awaiting agreement from both Washington and Tehran.
Conflicting signals from US and Iran
Since both sides have shared conflicting claims. the diplomatic situation remains unclear. US President Donald Trump recently suggested that discussions with Iran had been “productive” and hinted at a temporary pause in strikes on energy infrastructure. However, Iranian officials denied that any talks had taken place.
The US has been accused of spreading misleading information.
