Iran ends visa-free entry for Indians, new rules to take effect from November 22

PTC News Desk: The Iranian government has announced that it will end visa-free entry for Indian citizens starting November 22. From that date, Indians must have a visa not only to enter Iran but also to use Iranian airports for transit. Following this change, India’s Ministry of External Affairs has issued new advisories warning travellers about risks such as kidnapping and job scams.

"The Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has accordingly suspended the visa waiver facility available to ordinary Indian passport holders visiting Iran with effect from 22 November 2025. This measure is intended to prevent further misuse of the facility by criminal elements. From this date, Indian nationals with ordinary passports would be required to obtain a visa to enter or transit through Iran," the MEA said. "All Indian nationals intending to visit Iran are strongly advised to remain vigilant and avoid agents offering visa-free travel or onward transit to third countries via Iran," it further noted.

"The attention of the Government has been drawn to several incidents of Indian nationals being lured to Iran on false promises of employment or with assurances of onward transit to third countries. These individuals were tricked into journeying to Iran by taking advantage of the visa waiver facility available for ordinary Indian passport holders. On arrival in Iran, many of them were kidnapped for ransom," it emphasised.

Under the updated rules, Indians must apply for and receive an Iranian visa before boarding their flight. This requirement also applies to passengers who are only passing through Iran on their way to other Central Asian countries. Airlines have been instructed to verify that all travellers have the correct visa.

This move represents a significant change in Iran’s travel policy. Previously, Indians could enter Iran without a visa under certain conditions, a policy designed to strengthen diplomatic relations with India and Central Asian nations and boost tourism.

India and Iran have traditionally had strong diplomatic ties, and Iran’s rich cultural and historical sites draw many Indian visitors each year.
