Canada Federal Elections: Jagmeet Singh concedes defeat, steps down as NDP leader after losing seat
PTC News Desk: As the Liberal Party is all set to retain power, New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh has announced his decision to step down after eight years in charge of the party.
The decision comes in the backdrop of NDP's thumping defeat in the federal elections which has witnessed Liberal Party's unexpected win.
“Obviously, I'm disappointed that we could not win more seasons, but I'm not disappointed in our movement,” said Singh in his speech. “I'm hopeful for our party. I know that we will always choose hope over fear, and optimism over despair, and unity over hate,” Singh said as he conceded defeat.
He also congratulated Prime Minister Mark Carney, saying that it is an important job to protect Canada’s sovereignty from the threats of U.S. President Donald Trump. The Canada federal elections hold special significance amid US President Donald Trump's rising threat to make Canada 51st state of the United States.
As per the reports, the bigger question picture for Canadians was as who would deal better with Trump and his tariffs and threats to Canadian sovereignty?
Notably, Singh's party is also more likely to lose party status after NDP manages to sweep only seven states as the counting is in its final rounds.
