'Old relationship with US over': Canadian PM Mark Carney in victory speech as Liberal projected winner

PTC News Desk: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal Party is all set to sweep federal elections for 2025, securing a fourth term in power. However the party is likely to form minority government, after falling short of an outright majority, according to the projections.

A party needs 172 seats to secure a majority government.

As the party is on the verge of securing a thumping victory, Carney said Canada now finds itself at a "hinge moment of history" and can no longer rely on the US as a steadfast ally.

"Our old relationship of integration with the US is now over," he said.

"We are over the shock of the American betrayal," Carney added. "We have to take care of each other. As I’ve been warning for months, America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country. These are not idle threats."

Mark Carney also emphasised on unity amongst Canadians amid consistent threats from the United States. "President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never, ever happen," he said.

"This is Canada, and we decide what happens here," he asserted. "We will fight back with everything we have to get the best deal for Canada."

US President Donald Trump's threats significantly contributed to  Liberal Party's unexpected win. The threats outpoured nation's patriotism and forced Canadians to think who will be a better candidate to face Trump's threat and the people's mandate turned out to be in the favour of political newcommer Mark Carney.
