Russian strike targets cabinet building in Kyiv, Ukraine retaliates

PTC News Desk: The Ukraine-Russia war saw a sharp escalation on Sunday as Russian strikes hit government offices housing Ukraine’s cabinet in central Kyiv, igniting fires and killing at least three people, including a one-year-old child. In response, Ukraine targeted Russia’s Druzhba oil pipeline in the Bryansk region, broadening the conflict to both state institutions and energy infrastructure.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko confirmed: "For the first time, a government building was damaged by an enemy attack. We will restore the buildings, but lost lives cannot be returned." She urged western allies to respond with actions, not just words, by tightening sanctions against Russian oil and gas.

Thick plumes of smoke rose from the upper floors and roof of the cabinet building in Kyiv’s Pecherskyi district following the overnight assault, which officials described as the most severe in months. Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said the attack began with a swarm of drones and was followed by missile strikes. The victims included a baby, a young woman, and an elderly woman who had been sheltering in a basement.

A pregnant woman was among the injured. Residential districts such as Sviatoshynskyi and Darnytskyi also came under attack, with falling debris sparking fires and causing partial collapses in apartment blocks. Emergency crews worked overnight to control the blazes.

Ukraine’s air force reported that 805 drones and 13 missiles were unleashed in the assault. Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, accused Russia of “intentionally targeting civilian infrastructure” and urged residents to stay in shelters. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the direct hit on government offices as a “major escalation” and appealed to allies for stronger air defence support.
