Trump and Putin to meet in Alaska on August 15 to discuss ending Ukraine war

PTC Web Desk: US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he would hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15, aiming to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.

In a post on Truth Social, Donald Trump called it a “highly anticipated meeting” and confirmed it will take place next Friday in what he described as “the Great State of Alaska.” The meeting will be Trump’s first face-to-face conversation with Putin since returning to the White House. The choice of Alaska — geographically positioned between the US and Russia — adds symbolic weight to the talks.

Putin’s visit will be his first trip to the United States in 10 years. His last visit was in September 2015, when he met then-President Barack Obama during the UN General Assembly in New York. According to the US State Department, Putin first visited the US as Russian president in 2000 to attend the UN Millennium Summit with President Bill Clinton. The Alaska meeting will mark his eighth trip to the country.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin revealed that Putin spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping, briefing him on his recent meeting with US envoy Steve Witkoff. The Kremlin said Xi expressed support for a long-term resolution to the Ukraine conflict. Putin is also expected to visit China next month.

The US has accused China, North Korea, and Iran of supplying support to Russia in the ongoing war.

In addition, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke with Putin recently to discuss the latest developments in Ukraine. This follows Trump’s recent move to impose a 25% tariff on Indian goods, a step aimed at reducing Moscow’s war funding due to India’s continued imports of Russian oil. Putin has also reached out to leaders from South Africa, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus to discuss the situation.
