PTC News Desk: At the Alaska meet Russian President Putin said that the war with Ukraine would never have happened if Donald Trump were in regime in 2022, during their first face-to-face meeting in five years.

The Russian leader said Moscow and Washington had now established “very good direct contacts” after what he called a “very difficult period” in relations. “It was necessary to rectify the situation,” he told reporters. “We will always remember how our countries were fighting common enemies. This heritage will help us in future.”

The high-profile Alaska summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin ended on Friday without any breakthrough on halting or ending the war in Ukraine — Europe’s deadliest conflict since 1945, now in its fourth year.

Putin said Ukraine had been “one of the central subjects” of discussion and commended Trump’s “willingness to grasp the roots of the conflict.” He reiterated that Russia was “genuinely committed” to ending the war but emphasized that “the underlying causes must be addressed, and Russia’s security concerns cannot be ignored.” After nearly three hours of closed-door talks, the two leaders appeared briefly before reporters, noting progress on several matters but withholding specifics and declining to take questions.

Speaking in front of a banner that read “Pursuing Peace,” Trump remarked, “We reached agreement on many areas. On a few major issues, we’re not there yet, but we’ve moved forward. There’s no deal until everything is settled.”

As the summit wrapped up, Putin joked to Trump, “Next time in Moscow.”

Trump responded with a smile, “That’s an interesting idea. I’ll probably take some flak for it, but it’s not out of the question.”
