PTC Web Desk: US President Donald Trump has sparked fresh controversy by suggesting that even American citizens who commit violent crimes should be deported from the country. During a visit to a migrant detention centre in Florida on Tuesday, Trump said that people who commit brutal crimes — like attacking someone with a baseball bat or stabbing — should be removed from the US, regardless of whether they were born there.

“They’re not new to our country. They’re old to our country. Many of them were born in our country,” Trump told reporters, adding, “I think we ought to get them the hell out of here, too, if you want to know the truth. So maybe that will be the next job.”

Trump mentioned New York specifically, claiming the city had witnessed many such violent incidents. He emphasised that these were not accidents, implying that they were deliberate acts of violence.

This statement comes amid growing discussions around immigration and crime policies, especially in light of a recent memo issued by the US Justice Department. The memo outlines steps to strip certain individuals of their US citizenship — a process known as denaturalisation — if they are found guilty of serious crimes or obtained their citizenship fraudulently.

According to the memo, citizenship can be revoked for those involved in war crimes, terrorism, extrajudicial killings, gang violence, or other human rights abuses. It also applies to those who lied or concealed key facts during the naturalisation process.

Between 1990 and 2017, about 305 individuals were denaturalised, according to a report by Axios. The same report suggests that the Trump administration’s tougher stance could potentially affect nearly 25 million US citizens if such measures were fully enforced.
