Shimla, Nov 22- Biting cold wave conditions continued unabated in the higher hills and tribal areas in Himachal Pradesh as the minimum temperatures dropped further in some parts of the state, officials said. The minimum temperature stayed between minus 8 and minus 12 degrees Celsius in the high altitude tribal areas while Keylong and Kalpa in tribal Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur districts recorded a low of minus 7.7 degrees Celsius and minus 2.0 degrees Celsius, followed by Manali minus 0.4 degrees Celsius, Sundernagar 2.4 degrees Celsius, Solan 4.0 degrees Celsius and Shimla 6.1 degrees Celsius, Dharamsala 7.8, the local MeT said.


Meanwhile, the Manali-Keylong National Highway, which was closed for the last one week following heavy snowfall in Rohtang and other high mountain passes, was cleared today and would be open for vehicular traffic from tomorrow, the state officials said.

About four dozen people were stranded in Lahaul and Udaipur and over two dozen vehicles would be brought to Manali tomorrow, they said.

However, the maximum day temperatures rose by few notches as the region had a sunny and dry day, the local MeT said.

Una was the hottest in the region with maximum temperature at 26.5 degrees Celsius while Sundernagar, Bhuntar and Solan recorded a high of 23.3 degrees Celsius, 22.0 degrees Celsius and 21.3 degrees Celsius, followed by Nahan 20.6 degrees Celsius, Dharamshala 17.8 degrees Celsius, Shimla 17.1 degrees Celsius, Manali 15.0 degrees Celsius, Kalpa 10.0 degrees Celsius and Keylong 2.5 degrees Celsius.

The local MeT office has forecast dry weather in the region for the next six days with further drop in the mercury indicating that the winters would be harsh and severe.

Shimla Deputy Commissioner (DC) Rohan Chand Thakur held a meeting with officials of other related departments to review the "preparedness" to meet the situation in the wake of snowfall.

He said that adequate arrangements would be made for keeping the public transport system running and asked the Public Works Department (PWD) to endure that the Rampur- Rohroo, Haripur-Kupvi Na Jhiknipul-Chopal roads remained open after snowfall.

The deputy commissioner said that trouble spots at Fagu, Kufri, Narkanda, Kharapatthar Jubbal and Chopal and efforts would made to ensure that these roads were kept open after heavy snowfall.

Thakur directed that the roads to the Indira Gandhi Medical College hospital and the Kamla Nehru hospital, which remained frozen for days after snowfall be opened on priority and salt should be sprayed on these roads prevent freezing of snow.

He said that diesel should be stored in adequate quantity in hospitals for operating the generation in the event of power breakdown.

The deputy commissioner also directed that adequate quantity of food grains, liquefied petroleum gas and other essential commodities in the remote and far-flung areas so that there was no shortage during the snowfall. PTI
