Modi, Xi meet for substantive bilateral meeting, after the standoff

The first substantive bilateral meeting held between PM Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping after the Dokalam standoff that had created tension between the two nations. Modi congratulated Xi on a “very successful” BRICS Summit, China’s state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The meeting seemed an effort by the two sides to overcome the bitterness they experienced in the Standoff for 73 days earlier. Modi was accompanied by senior officials, including National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar when he met Chinese President. Modi, Xi meet for substantive bilateral meeting, after the standoff The Chinese and the Indian troops were engaged in a standoff since June 16 after the Indian side stopped the construction of a road by the Chinese Army. This came to a closure on August 28, when the India’s External Affairs Ministry announced that New Delhi and Beijing had decided on “expeditious disengagement” of their border troops in the disputed Dokalam area. Indian officials had earlier indicated that the two leaders were expected to discuss ways to create confidence-building measures, in order to “move on” after the standoff. -PTC News
