While most of us rest our fate in the hands of destiny and blame every odd that comes our way for not being able to make it big in life. This man changes our thought, give us all the more reason to be a winner. Varun Khullar from Delhi headed to Manali with his friends in 2014, completely unaware of what life had in store for the young lad, like each one of us would. The then-22-year-old met with an accident and suffered a spinal cord injury, which left him paralysed waist down. In a few hours, his life changed forever. The accident couldn't take away his dream of becoming a professional DJ, and today Varun, 26, is the first differently-abled DJ in India, and the second in the world after Paul Johnson. "It is not worth giving up a dream even if the society you live in thinks you should. I always wanted to become a DJ, and that desire didn't die even after my accident. So, for the first two and a half years after my accident, I began self-grooming. I used to watch a lot of YouTube videos, read related books, and started producing my own music," says Varun, who also completed a couse in Djing and music production from the ILM Academy, Gurugram, earlier this year. "People used to say hurtful things such as, 'How will you make people dance when you yourself can't dance.' or 'How will you be able to do this?' But I never took these words to my heart. I was clear about what I want to do and just focused on that," he says. After running the path of fire with bare feet, Varun got a chance to play at Kitty Su, one of the most popular clubs in Delhi, in May this year. "I knew that Kitty Su is one of the few places in Delhi that are wheelchair accessible. I contacted them and sent them some of my productions. After a while, when they were convinced that I can do this well, they offered me to play at the club," reveals Varun, adding that he was made their resident DJ after 2-3 months of first playing there. publive-image Now, he is a permanent fixture at the popular club and is also set to open Timeout 72, a music festival in Goa, which will feature the likes of Wiz Khalifa and Martin Garrix, among others. But Varun's ultimate goal is to play on an international stage and to play the music he creates. "I also wish to encourage more differently-abled people to pursue what they like. The doctors had told me that I will never even be able to sit. But today, I am working, driving my own car, and doing what I like. We need to first accept ourselves and then society will accept us too. We can't fight for our rights sitting at home. So, I try and motivate as many people as I can to find that one reason that will make them want to live life with a newfound purpose," says an optimistic Varun. publive-image It's courage that takes you forward, an urge and love for what you want, proves the lad who went on against all odds. -PTC News-
