19-year-old arrested by Delhi Police for posing as an AIIMS doctor
A 19-year-old has been arrested by Delhi Police for posing as an AIIMS doctor for the last five months.
The accused, Adnan Khurram, had used his fake identity to befriend employees across departments in the hospital and make friends with medical students, as per reports. He also participated in various events meant for the doctors, such as strikes and marathons.
He was arrested on Saturday after he participated in a marathon organized by the doctors, where a few senior doctors questioned him about his identity. Since he failed to come up with a satisfactory answer, the group of doctors overpowered him, and then handed him over to the police.
The police was "surprised" by his 'knowledge' of medicines, and the names of department heads and doctors at AIIMS.
The reason behind his impersonating as an AIIMS doctor is unclear. As per the police, he kept changing his reasons in the statement.
One of the reasons he gave was, he wanted to help a sick family member get preferential treatment at the hospital. Another reason given by him is that he liked spending time with the doctors because he wanted to join the medical profession.
RDA president Harjit Singh said that he had grown suspicious of Khurram and kept an eye on him.
“He would roam around wearing the lab coat and stethoscope all the time. We found out that he had made different claims to different doctors. To some, he would claim that he was a junior resident doctor while to junior resident doctors, he would introduce himself as an undergraduate medical student. He had even made his way to the WhatsApp groups,” Singh said.
Khurram has been booked under 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 419 that pertains to impersonation of the Indian Penal Code at Hauz Khas Police Station.
