101 dark spots vulnerable to crime in Chandigarh, identified

101 dark spots that are highly crime-prone have been identified by the Chandigarh police. Major commercial hubs of the city — Sectors 17, 34 and IT Park are among the spots identified by the police.

These spots are most prone to crimes such as snatching, carjacking, vehicle thefts, besides other petty crimes. They have also pointed out faults in streetlights at 737 points.

Dark spots are isolated places within sectors and public parks that are not illuminated. Well-lit roads help keep a check on crimes and accidents at night.

Through letters to the Chandigarh administration chief engineer and the municipal corporation, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Nilambari Jagdale has recommended putting up of more streetlights in these areas.

Meanwhile, the UT SSP has instructed deputy superintendents of police (DSPs) and senior inspectors to set up temporary pickets at vulnerable points, such as Tribune Chowk, Bitta Petrol Pump, Shivalik Garden in Manimajra, Sector 22, besides regular patrolling from Dariya to Transport Chowk.Moreover, they have been instructed to deploy sufficient police force at these points from 10pm to 6am.
