Coronavirus update: Union Govt warns against mass gatherings as festival season nearing

Coronavirus update: The Union Government has urged people to get vaccination done and follow Covid 19-appropriate behaviour, especially during the festive season. The government said mass gatherings should be discouraged, but if attending it is essential then full vaccination should be a priority.

The Union Government warned that the second wave of coronavirus infection in India is not yet over, even though the weekly positivity rate is showing an overall declining trend.

As per the latest coronavirus update, 39 districts in the country reported over 10 per cent weekly Covid 19 positivity rate in the week ending August 31 while in 38 districts it was between 5 and 10 per cent.

While 16 per cent of India’s adult population have received both doses of coronavirus vaccine, 54 per cent have been administered at least the first dose.

“In Sikkim, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Himachal Pradesh, all adult population have got at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine,” the government said.

With the festival nearing, there is a possible threat of a third wave of Covid-19 infection. The Union Government said mass gatherings should be avoided and if needed, full vaccination should be a prerequisite.

“It will be appropriate to say in view of a rise in coronavirus cases in some states that people should celebrate festivals at home, follow appropriate behaviour and embrace vaccination,” the government said. It was also informed that 300 cases of Delta Plus variant of Covid 19 have been detected in India so far.
