Farmers' protest: Four trains cancelled at UP railway stations

Passengers at two railway stations in Uttar Pradesh were left in the lurch after four trains, two at each station, had to be cancelled due to the farmers' protest.

The trains were held back at the railway stations in Moradabad and Bareilly and passengers could not reach their destinations. Railways staff said five counters were opened for these passengers to reclaims refunds on their tickets at the Moradabad railway station.

JK Thakur, a railway official at the Moradabad railway station, said, "Two trains in Moradabad and two in Bareilly, have been cancelled in view of the farmers' protest. We've opened five counters for passengers to claim ticket refund."

The trains which were cancelled were -- Kanpur-Jammu Tawi (04693), Howrah-Amritsar (03005), Ghazipur City-Vaishno Devi Katra (04655) & Varanasi-Jammu Tawi (02237).

"We were asked to vacate the train as they said that the train won't go forward. I have come to cancel my ticket," added a passenger at one of the refund counters at the Moradabad railway station.

The farmers have been protesting at the different borders of the national capital since November 26, 2020 against the three newly enacted farm laws: Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

Similarly, at least nine trains were cancelled while 13 were either short terminated or diverted, while vehicular movement was disrupted after farmers blocked rail tracks and a national highway near Jalandhar on Friday.

On the call of the BKU (Doaba), farmers on Friday went on protest for an indefinite period to press the Punjab Government to accept their demands related to the pending dues of sugarcane and hike in cane prices.

The protesters blocked the Jalandhar-Amritsar national highway near the Dhanowali railway crossing, along with the Ludhiana-Amritsar and Ludhiana-Jammu rail tracks in Jalandhar.
