The university has not revealed the reason behind the attack or whether the professor and student had any previous dispute. Delhi University Proctor Manoj Kumar Singh confirmed that the incident took place on Monday morning and said an investigation had been launched.

Singh, who joined the Faculty of Law during the 2024-25 academic session, has been suspended and barred from entering any Delhi University premises with immediate effect.

The university has also formed an independent three-member committee of professors to investigate the assault and find out what led to the confrontation.

The incident has sparked strong criticism from the teaching community, with teachers demanding stricter action and raising concerns over repeated cases of violence and aggression against faculty members on campus.

The Democratic Teachers' Front (DTF) said this was the third incident involving violence or physical aggression against teachers in recent months. The group also criticised the university administration, calling its response to such incidents slow and inadequate, and said that suspension alone was not enough to prevent such incidents.
