Monsoon wreaks havoc in Mumbai: Heavy rain triggers schools closure, red alert issued; 5 killed
Due to the intense rainfall, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ordered schools and colleges in Mumbai to remain closed for the afternoon session.
PTC News Desk: Heavy rainfall is expected to continue in Mumbai over the weekend, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for the city. The weather department has warned of heavy to very heavy rain, with extremely heavy showers possible in some areas, along with strong winds of up to 60 kmph.
Several parts of Mumbai received more than 100 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8 am on Saturday. While buses and other public transport services are operating, many commuters reported delays on the suburban local train network.

Heavy rain has been lashing the city since the beginning of the week, leading to waterlogging in many areas. Among the worst-affected locations, Bandra's H West ward recorded 150.6 mm of rain, while several other parts of Mumbai, including Parel, Matunga-Dadar, Fort, Wadala, Vikhroli, Ghatkopar and Mankhurd, also received over 100 mm.
According to BMC data, the island city recorded an average of 99 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours, while the eastern and western suburbs received 98 mm and 94 mm, respectively.
Authorities have also warned about high tides, which could worsen flooding in low-lying areas. A high tide of 4.26 metres is expected during the afternoon, followed by another high tide early Sunday morning.
Heavy rain has also caused flooding and traffic congestion in parts of Pune and Thane.
So far, five rain-related deaths have been reported across Maharashtra—three in Mumbai and one each in Pune and Thane. Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain cautious in flood-prone areas.
