Two-storey building collapses in Chandigarh's Industrial Area Phase II, several feared trapped
PTC News Desk: A building collapsed in Chandigarh's Industrial Area Phase 2 at around 4:20 pm on Saturday. Several people were inside the building when the incident occurred. So far, five people have been rescued, while the owner and several others are still believed to be trapped under the debris.
Police and emergency teams rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information about the collapse and launched rescue operations.
Rescue workers are creating access routes to reach those trapped beneath the rubble. A crane has been used to lift the concrete roof slab and place it on bricks to allow air to reach people who may be trapped underneath. A JCB machine has also been brought in to speed up the rescue efforts. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been called to assist in the operation.
One of the survivors, Ramesh, said it felt like an earthquake. He said the building suddenly collapsed and estimated that around 20 to 25 people were inside at the time.
A member of the emergency response team said five people had been rescued from the site and taken to hospital for treatment.
The building was located on Plot No. 28/9 and was being used for scrap-related work. According to MP Chawla, the structure was very old, and the roof collapse appears to have caused the accident. He said rescue teams reached the site quickly and initially pulled out two people. However, information later suggested that two people who were on the first floor had become trapped under the debris.
