Tamil Nadu results: TVK’s debut shakes TN politics; party now eyeing coalition with Congress or Left
Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s TVK wins 108 seats in Tamil Nadu but falls short of majority. Party reaches out to Congress and Left allies to form government
PTC Web Desk: Actor-turned-politician Vijay has emerged as the biggest winner in Tamil Nadu’s Assembly elections, but his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, is still short of forming the government on its own. With 108 seats in the 234-member House, the party now needs at least 10 more MLAs to cross the majority mark of 118.
Sources indicate that Vijay is preparing to open dialogue with like-minded parties, including Congress and Left groups, to stitch together a coalition.
Talks Likely With Congress, Left and Regional Players
According to sources, TVK is likely to reach out to the Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Indian Union Muslim League and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi. Invitations for formal discussions are expected soon.
These parties are currently aligned under the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance. In the recent polls, the Congress secured five seats, while IUML, CPI, CPM and VCK won two seats each. If they decide to back TVK, the numbers would comfortably push Vijay past the halfway mark.
Congress Maintains Cautious Stand
Reacting to speculation, Congress MP Sasikanth Senthil said the party would take a “collective and considered” decision. He emphasised that any move would be guided by the interests of Tamil Nadu and the party’s ideological commitments.
Senthil acknowledged internal discussions within the Congress, calling them a natural part of its functioning. However, he underlined that the party would not act opportunistically and would remain committed to its secular values.
He also made it clear that the Congress continues to stand with its current ally, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and any shift in position would only come after consultations with the central leadership.
Family Appeal Adds Political Twist
Adding another dimension to the developments, Vijay’s father, filmmaker SA Chandrasekhar, publicly urged the Congress to support TVK. He argued that such a move could help the Congress regain political strength in the state and revive its legacy.
TVK’s Debut Shakes Tamil Nadu Politics
The election results have significantly altered the state’s political landscape. TVK not only emerged as the single largest party but also unseated the long-dominant DMK. Chief Minister MK Stalin lost his Kolathur seat, while the DMK was reduced to 59 seats.
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam finished third with 47 seats. Smaller allies like PMK managed four seats, while the BJP, AMMK and DMDK secured one seat each.
Vijay Elected Legislature Party Leader
Following the results, Vijay held a meeting with newly elected MLAs and was unanimously chosen as the leader of the TVK legislature party. He also won from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies.
With nearly 35 per cent vote share in its very first election, TVK has broken the decades-long dominance of the DMK-AIADMK political axis in Tamil Nadu.
