Former DSP Jaspal Singh, convicted for life in Jaswant Singh Khalra murder case, has been untraceable for three years. Police say the address he gave jail authorities was fake
PTC Web Desk: Jaspal Singh, a former DSP convicted for life in the murder of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, remains untraceable. The address he had given to the Nabha jail authorities has turned out to be fake, the police have confirmed.
Jaspal Singh was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1995 for his role in the abduction and killing of Khalra. He walked out on interim bail in May 2023, and since then, no one seems to know where he is. According to records maintained at the Nabha jail, Jaspal Singh had listed his address as Majhi village in Hoshiarpur district. But when the police went there to check, they found the address was fake.
Balwinder Singh, the officer in-charge of Sadar police station in Hoshiarpur, said his team spoke to the village sarpanch and several local residents during the inquiry. None of them could confirm any link between Jaspal Singh and the village.
Nabha Open Jail officials have also reached out to the police to help verify the former officer's current whereabouts. Jail Superintendent Chanchal Sharma said the move is part of routine verification procedure and does not point to anything unusual on its own.
Sources say the entire matter will now be reported to the CBI for further investigation.
This development comes amid renewed attention on the case following controversy around the film "Satluj," which dramatises events connected to this period. The film's removal from streaming platform ZEE5 has also reached the Punjab and Haryana High Court, where a petition alleges it was taken down without any legal order, violating the right to free speech.
