Punjab youth Lovepreet Singh dies while saving friend in Canada's Lachine Canal; Barnala family seeks help
PTC Web Desk: A heartbreaking tragedy has been reported from Canada, where a 26-year-old Punjab youth lost his life while attempting to save his friend from drowning in Montreal's Lachine Canal. The deceased, Lovepreet Singh, was a resident of Tapa Mandi, Barnala district. According to family members, the incident occurred near the banks of the Lachine Canal in Montreal when his friend reportedly slipped and fell into the water.
On seeing his friend struggling, Lovepreet immediately jumped into the canal in an effort to rescue him. However, both men were swept away by the strong current.
Emergency responders launched an extensive rescue operation and recovered both youths from the canal after several hours. They were rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
The tragic news has left Lovepreet's family devastated.
Lovepreet Singh was the only son of retired CRPF personnel Balvir Singh. He had moved to Montreal on a work permit around two-and-a-half years ago and was employed as a trailer truck driver with a private company.
After completing his Class 12, Lovepreet moved Canada to build a better future and support his family. To arrange nearly Rs 29 lakh for his overseas journey, his father reportedly sold the family's agricultural land.
His untimely death has shattered the dreams of his parents and younger sister.
The grieving parents have appealed to the Government of India, the Punjab Government, the Canadian authorities, the NRI community and social organisations for assistance in bringing their son's mortal remains back to Tapa Mandi. They said they want to perform his last rites in Punjab according to Sikh religious traditions.
Lovepreet is survived by his father Balvir Singh, mother Veerpal Kaur and his only sister.
The second victim, whose identity was initially unclear, is reported to be from Amritsar district. According to local sources, his parents have been identified as Sukhraj Singh and Jaswant Kaur, residents of Butala/Naurangpur village.
