IMD issues orange alert in Punjab, Chandigarh as cold wave condition prevails

Over the past 24 hours, the state’s temperature has fallen by 2.1 degrees Celsius and is now 4.1 degrees below normal.

PTC News Desk: The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert fo rdense fog , cold wave and cold day conditions already prevailing in Punjab and Chandigarh. The bitting cold weather to likely to persist until January 9. 


As a result the daytime temperatures have also dropped significantly. Temperatures are likely to drop further by 2 to 3 degrees over the next two days.


Over the past 24 hours, the state’s temperature has fallen by 2.1 degrees Celsius and is now 4.1 degrees below normal. Hoshiarpur recorded the lowest temperature at 6.8 degrees Celsius, while Amritsar experienced cold day conditions. 


Zero visibility reported at several places


On Sunday, Chandigarh and Punjab witnessed hazy conditions throughout the day, with the sun failing to appear in many areas. During this period, zero-metre visibility was recorded in Amritsar, 50 metres in Ballowal, and 200 metres in Gurdaspur, causing significant inconvenience to motorists. In some places, temperatures ranged between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius.


According to the Meteorological Department, very dense fog is likely today in Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Moga, Ludhiana, Barnala, Mansa, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, SAS Nagar (Mohali), and Malerkotla.



In addition, cold day conditions are likely to prevail in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Rupnagar, Patiala, and SAS Nagar (Mohali). The weather is expected to remain dry.
