Punjab Elections 2022: AAP flags EVM glitch, voting delayed in several places

Chandigarh, February 20: As the voting is underway for the assembly elections in Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday flagged concerns over ‘EVM malfunction’ in a few booths, seeking immediate action from the Election Commission.

Reportedly, EVMs are not working in the Sanour AC, Booth No. 209 and Shutrana AC, Booth no. 20 and no. 16.

Furthermore, according to reports, the EVM in Bhawani village of Bhoa constituency was not working, due to which polling has been delayed.

EVM are also not working in the following areas, Booth No 19, Khadoor Sahib AC; Booth No 86, Tarn Taran AC; Booth No 5, Khem Karan AC.

Meanwhile, the total average voter turnout in Punjab till 9:00 am was recorded at nearly 5 percent.

In single-phase assembly elections in Punjab, 1304 candidates are in the fray. Over 2.14 crore voters of the state will cast their votes.

Of the total 1304 candidates, 231 are from national parties, 250 from state parties, 362 from unrecognised parties and 461 are Independent candidates.

Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Shiromani Akali Dal-Bahujan Samaj Party alliance and Bharatiya Janata Party-former chief minister Amarinder Singh’s Punjab Lok Congress party are all major players in this multi-cornered election.

Apart from three special state observers, the Election Commission of India has appointed 65 general observers, 50 expenditure observers and 29 police observers, who are keeping a close vigil on the proceedings.

In the 2017 assembly elections in Punjab, Congress had won 77 seats and Shiromani Akali Dal won18 seats. The AAP, on the other hand, came in second place with 20 seats.

The results of the Punjab Assembly elections 2022 will be declared on March 10.
