Himachal Pradesh: IMD issues orange alert for 8 districts today due to heavy rainfall

Shimla, July 23: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an orange alert, predicting heavy rainfall in eight districts of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday. Deputy Director IMD, Bui Lal, stated that several districts in the region had already experienced substantial downpours in the past 24 hours, with Sirmaur district receiving 195 mm of rainfall.

In response to the floods caused by the incessant rainfall in Kullu district, the government has provided a relief amount of five crore rupees to affected families. As per Ashutosh Garg, DCP of Kullu, around 1,700 families have been impacted, and the relief funds are being distributed by the revenue department personnel.

The torrential rains have led to severe landslides and flash floods, resulting in significant financial and infrastructural losses in Himachal Pradesh. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu acknowledged that the state has faced the worst rain and flood disasters in the last 75 years, estimating the total loss to be around 8,000 crore rupees. The Chief Minister urged the Union Government to provide immediate financial relief and support for the restoration of roads, electricity, and water supply in the affected areas.

With the region still on high alert for heavy rains, the state authorities have readied emergency response teams to prioritize saving lives and providing aid to affected communities. The situation remains critical, and Himachal Pradesh is in dire need of assistance to cope with this disaster.
