Assam: Heavy rainfall, storms kill 14 people in two days
Dispur (Assam), April 17: The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) informed on Sunday that the death toll due to severe storms, lightning and heavy rainfall in the state has climbed to 14.
Earlier on Saturday, the storm claimed the lives of eight people, while "four were killed at Tingkhong area in Dibrugarh district on April 15. Three were killed in Barpeta district and one in Goalpara district on April 14."
"A total of 20,286 people in 592 villages of Goalpara, Barpeta, Dibrugarh, Kamrup (Metro), Nalbari, Chirang, Darrang, Cachar, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong, Udalguri, Kamrup district have affected in a severe storm hit the districts," the ASDMA reported on Saturday.
Furthermore, four people including a minor girl died after the storm uprooted the bamboo trees in the Tingkhong area in the Dibrugarh district.
Due to lighting, a 15-year-old minor boy was reported dead in the Matia area of the Goalpara district.

In the last few days, the storm uprooted dozens of trees and dozens of electric poles, as well as damaged many homes in various locations.
According to the ASDMA report released on Saturday, 5,809 kutcha houses and 655 pucca houses were partially damaged, while 853 kutcha houses and 27 pucca houses were completely destroyed.
Apart from that, heavy rain and severe storms in the state impacted 34 other institutions in 12 districts.
Since the beginning of the month, torrential rain has been hitting the parts of the Northeast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning earlier this week about heavy rain in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya until April 18.
