Cabinet clears ordinance making instant triple talaq an offence
The union Cabinet on Wednesday approved an ordinance to criminalise triple talaq, the instant divorce prevalent among Muslims.
The contentious Triple talaq bill was passed by Lok Sabha in December 2017 but could not be taken up for discussion and passage in Rajya Sabha.
The Congress-led Opposition had been demanding that the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017, be subject to further scrutiny.
In August, the Union cabinet had cleared some amendments to the draft bill allowing the magistrate to grant bail after hearing the wife; and made the offence of instant triple talaq “compoundable”.
