Chandigarh: Massive hike in Onion prices, being sold at Rs 80 per kg

Chandigarh: The price of onions shoots up in the market, yet again it continues to bring tears to the residents of the tricity. For the past three months, the prices of onions and tomatoes have been fluctuating. As of today, the price of onions and tomatoes have witnessed a major hike. On Tuesday, the onions were sold at Rs 80 per kg (the highest rate of the year), while tomatoes were sold at Rs 60 per kg.

A vendor was quoted by news agency ANI as saying, "There is a supply crunch as rains have destroyed the crop. If the government wants to contain the prices, then it can do it. It may take around a month to come down."

Adding, he said "Price of onions has increased from Rs 50 per kg to Rs 80 per kg. It was Rs 70 per kg yesterday; today it has touched Rs 80 per kg. There is a supply crunch as rains have destroyed the crop".
