Punjab Congress Crisis: Charanjit Singh Channi will be the next Chief Minister of Punjab, Congress in-charge Harish Rawat confirmed on Sunday. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Bramh Mohindra will be the Deputy Chief Ministers.
CM-designate Charanjit Singh Channi said, "We have presented our stance, unanimously supported by party MLAs, before the Governor. The oath ceremony will be held at 11 am on September 20."
Harish Rawat tweeted: "It gives me immense pleasure to announce that Sh. Charanjit Singh Channi has been unanimously elected as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party of Punjab."
Citing 'humiliation', Captain Amarinder Singh had resigned as the Punjab Chief Minister on September 18.
Channi is currently Minister of Technical Educational and Industrial Training in the Punjab Government.
Channi is the MLA from the Chamkaur Sahib Assembly constituency. Earlier, he was the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha from 2015 to 2016.
Earlier in the day, there were speculations that Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa will be the next Chief Minister of Punjab. However, the reports stated that Navjot Singh Sidhu asked the high command to reconsider its decision on making Randhawa as the CM.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said, "It's the high command's decision and I welcome it. Channi is like my younger brother. I am not at all disappointed."
Former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh congratulated Charanjit Singh Channi. "My best wishes to Charanjit Singh Channi. I hope he’s able to keep the border state of Punjab safe and protect our people from the growing security threat from across the border," he said.
