Congress' Sadhu Singh Dharmsot gets show-cause notice over road show in Nabha

Ahead of crucial assembly elections in Punjab, Nabha Returning Officer on Monday issued a show-cause notice to Congress' candidate Sadhu Singh Dharmsot for holding a road show in the assembly constituency. This comes on the day the Elections Commission of India extended the ban on massive political rallies in five poll-bound states. Notably, after reviewing the Covid-19 situation in five poll-bound states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur, ECI on Monday extended the restriction on large political gatherings until February 11. Meanwhile, with the first phase of the seven-phase assembly elections in five states from February 10, the poll body has allowed physical public meetings with a maximum capacity of 1000 people. As per the latest decision by ECI, the limit for door to door campaigns has been enhanced. Now, instead of 10, 20 persons excluding security personnel, will be allowed for door to door campaigns. The Election Commission has asked the political parties and candidates to adhere to Covid-appropriate behaviour and guidelines, as well as the Model Code of Conduct, at all times during election-related activities. In its last meeting on January 22, the ECI had extended the ban on physical rallies and roadshows in five poll-bound states till January 31 due to an increase in Covid-19 cases across the country. Assembly Elections in Punjab, Goa, Manipur, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh will take place in seven phases, starting from February 10. The counting of votes will be done on March 10.
