Coronavirus: Punjab Jail Minister Sukhjinder Randhawa proposes to release 5800 inmates

In the wake of coronavirus, Punjab Jail Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa on Wednesday sent a proposal to the Punjab government for the release of 2,800 inmates who are lodged in jails for petty crimes like snatching and 3000 criminals who were caught with small quantity drugs. Meanwhile, the final decision is yet to be taken. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa was quoted by news agency ANI as saying: "There are concerns that crime rate may go up after the release of these prisoners. State DGP & ADGP (jails) have discussed the issue with SPs and a decision will be taken accordingly. Also, we are sanitizing the jails as a preventive measure against."

Coronavirus in Punjab

Punjab has reported only one confirmed case of coronavirus so far. Earlier, the Group of Ministers in Punjab issued the directions to shut down all the malls, museums, local weekly kisan mandis, shopping complexes and asked all the religious institutions including Dera Heads to postpone religious congregations till March 31. Likewise, the School Education Department and administrative bodies of other private educational institutes were asked to postpone the examinations. Havoc of Coronavirus

The total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in India has jumped to 147 with three deaths reported so far. Meanwhile, the total number of confirmed cases have been recorded 199,264 while 7,994 deaths have been reported across the globe. -PTC News
