FIR registered against Ranveer Singh for hurting religious sentiments
PTC News Desk: Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has been booked by Bengaluru Police for allegedly “insulting and mocking the sacred Daiva tradition” after he reenacted a scene inspired by Kannada actor Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: A Legend Chapter-1. An FIR has been registered against the actor just days after he issued a public apology for the mimicry.
FIR registered against Ranveer Singh over Daiva tradition remarks
The case has been filed against the Dhurandhar star under Sections 196, 299, and 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The FIR was lodged on Wednesday following a complaint by Prashanth Methal (46), a Bengaluru-based lawyer, after an Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACJM) court directed authorities to investigate the matter. The complaint relates to an incident that allegedly occurred during the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 28, 2025.
Methal alleged that Ranveer Singh, while sharing the stage with the lead actor of Kantara: Chapter-1, performed actions that ridiculed and disrespected the sacred Bhoota Kola ritual practiced in Coastal Karnataka. He stated that he is a devoted follower of Chavundi Daiva — a guardian spirit revered in Bhoota Kola — and that the deity holds personal and familial religious significance for him.
The complainant further claimed that Singh mimicked the divine expressions associated with Panjurli/Guliga Daiva in what he described as a “vulgar, humorous, and disrespectful” manner, and allegedly referred to Chavundi Daiva as a “female ghost.” Despite reportedly being asked not to enact the Daiva sequence, the actor went ahead and performed an emotional Chavundi Daiva scene from Kantara: Chapter-1 on stage.
“Chavundi Daiva is not a ghost, but a revered and powerful guardian spirit representing justice, protection, and sacred feminine energy, with profound cultural and spiritual importance in the coastal region,” Methal stated in his complaint.
