PTC Web Desk: The Union Home Ministry has granted actor Shah Rukh Khan's NGO Meer Foundation a licence under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), allowing it to receive funding from donors abroad.

The Meer Foundation, founded in 2013, primarily serves women who have been victims of acid attacks. It is registered as a not-for-profit organisation under the Companies Act and as a charitable institution under the Income Tax Act.

According to people aware of the matter, the licence to Meer Foundation was granted several months ago, but no exact date was specified. This year, up to 175 organisations have been granted FCRA licences. The organisations include the Mary Kom Regional Boxing Foundation, an NGO founded by Olympic medalist and Rajya Sabha member MC Mary Kom.

Over alleged legal violations, the government has cancelled the licences of NGOs such as the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF), Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust (RGCT), and Centre for Policy Research (CPR).

Between 2019 and 2022, the Union Home Ministry's FCRA unit conducted inspections or audits of at least 335 NGOs and associations to ensure compliance with funding rules.
