Father of fibre optics, Dr Narinder Singh Kapany, dies at 94

Narinder Singh Kapany Death: Dr Narinder Singh Kapany, also known as the 'father of fibre optics', passed away on Friday at the age of 94. Dr Kapany was known for his research on fibre optic communications, lasers, etc. Dr Narinder Singh Kapany is one of the 10 most renowned Sikhs across the world. He earned the title of “Father of Fibre-Optics” and was named one of the seven “Unsung Heroes” by the Fortune magazine. Kapany was born in Moga and graduated from Agra University. He did advanced studies in optics at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London. In 1955, He received his doctorate from the University of London. Dr Kapany had done research on fibre optic communications, bio-medical instrumentation, lasers, pollution monitoring and solar energy. Meanwhile, he became a member of the US National Inventors’ Council. In 1960, he founded the Optics Technology Incorporation where he served as Chairman of the board, President and Director of research for almost 12 years. Later in 1973, Dr Kapany founded Kaptron Incorporation. He was its President and CEO until 1990 when he sold the company to AMP Inc. Responding to the Dr Narinder Singh Kapany's death, Harjinder Singh Kukreja wrote: "RIP Dr. Kapany! Thank you for fast internet! Sikh American scientist, Dr. Narinder Singh Kapany, known as the “Father of Fibre Optics” for path-breaking research in 1950s on fibre optics paving way for high-speed broadband internet, laser surgeries & endoscopy passed away today." -PTC News
