Goa Elections 2022: Coastal state all set to vote for 40 Assembly seats

Panaji, February 13: Following the conclusion of poll campaigning in Goa on Saturday, the coastal state will vote for 40 Assembly seats in a single phase on Monday. In a multi-cornered political fight in Goa, the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is up against the Congress, Trinamool Congress and Aam Admi Party (AAP). Goa Assembly has a strength of 40 members, of which BJP presently has 17 legislators and enjoys the support of legislators from Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), Vijay Sardesai of the Goa Forward Party (GFP) and three independents. The GFP and MGP each have three MLAs, while Congress has 15 MLAs in the house. A total of 301 candidates from several political outfits are in the electoral fray in Goa. The ruling BJP, Congress, Trinamool Congress and Aam Aadmi Party along with Shiv Sena are the key contenders for the upcoming Assembly elections in Goa. Goa geared up for 2022 polls Meanwhile, after being refused a ticket from the Panaji seat by BJP, Utpal Parrikar, son of former Chief Minister Manohar Parikkar quit the party and is now contesting as an independent candidate from his father's traditional Panaji Assembly seat. The ex-Congress leader had joined BJP along with nine other MLAs in 2019. Goa geared up for 2022 polls Goa witnessed intense campaigning by the top leaders of various political parties, ahead of polls. Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram and AICC in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao canvassed in Goa, sought votes for works carried out by the previous Congress-led governments. The party also slammed political rivals for hampering the welfare of the people in the state. Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Girish Chodankar also posted a video message for voters in Goa and recalled works done by the party's government in the past in the state. Goa geared up for 2022 polls Similarly, BJP and TMC leaders along with other political parties posted video messages and highlighted the developmental works carried out by them in their respective constituencies. Meanwhile, Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP's national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister, has promised cash assistance to every woman over the age of 18 and other incentives to a variety of communities if his party wins power in the state.
